Garage Door Not Opening in Calgary? Here's What to Check

A garage door that won’t open is one of the most disruptive household problems — especially in a Calgary January when you need to get the car out and the temperature is -25°C. Before calling for service, there are a few quick checks that can tell you exactly what the problem is and whether you can fix it yourself or need a professional.

Check 1: Remote Battery

The most common reason a garage door won’t respond to the remote is a dead or dying battery. Try the wall button inside the garage. If the door opens from the wall button but not the remote, the remote battery is the problem. Replace it with a fresh battery of the correct type — most remotes use CR2032 or AA batteries. If the remote still doesn’t work after a new battery, the remote may need to be reprogrammed to the opener.

Check 2: Power to the Opener

Check that the opener is plugged in and that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. Opener units are typically plugged into a ceiling outlet in the garage — check that the cord hasn’t come loose. If the opener light is on but the door won’t move, the opener has power but there is a mechanical issue.

Check 3: The Safety Sensors

Every modern garage door opener has two safety photo-eye sensors near the bottom of the door tracks. If these are misaligned, blocked or dirty, the door will refuse to close (and sometimes won’t open). Look at both sensor units — they should each have a small LED light that is solid green or amber. If one is blinking or off, the sensors are misaligned or blocked. Clear any debris and try gently realigning the sensor that is not lit solid. If this doesn’t resolve it, call for sensor repair.

Check 4: The Manual Release

If the opener is running but the door won’t move, the trolley may have become disconnected from the opener. Pull the red emergency release cord that hangs from the opener rail. This disconnects the door from the opener drive so you can operate it manually. If the door moves freely when manually operated, the issue is with the opener drive system. If the door is very heavy or won’t stay up when lifted manually, a spring is likely broken.

Check 5: Frozen Bottom Seal

In Calgary winters, the rubber bottom seal along the bottom edge of the door can freeze to the concrete floor. When the opener tries to open the door, it pulls against the frozen seal and can’t move. This is common after freezing rain or when snow melts and refreezes overnight. You can break the seal free by gently pushing up on the door while pressing the open button, or by pouring warm water along the bottom seal to melt the ice. Do not force the opener — it can strip the drive gears.

If the door is very heavy when manually operated, a spring or cable has likely broken — call for service immediately. If the door makes grinding or scraping sounds, there may be a track or roller problem. If the opener makes noise but nothing moves and the door is locked in the down position, the drive system has failed.
